KPAC24 Session organised by Ecole de Maintien de la Paix
20 novembre 2024 | 10:30-12:00
Session Language: French (English translation provided)
Session Description:
This session will focus on the emergence of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) as a regional solution to strengthen military and security cooperation in the fight against violent extremism, following the failure of the G5 Sahel. The ESA aims to develop a collaborative and inclusive approach to tackling the region's persistent security challenges. The panel will explore the reasons for the emergence of the ESA, its objectives of regional stabilisation, and its ambitions for transition to a sub-regional federal system, particularly in sensitive areas such as Liptako-Gourma. Discussions will focus on lessons learned from past efforts, how the ESA could enhance regional security, and obstacles to overcome for effective implementation.
Objectives:
To analyse the failures of the G5 Sahel and the reasons that led to the creation of the ESA.
Assess the potential of the ESA to stabilise the region and combat terrorism independently.
Identify collaborative approaches, including the involvement of local actors, to improve the effectiveness of security efforts in the Sahel.
Formulate practical recommendations for strengthening cooperation between ESA member states and minimising foreign interference.
