KPAC24 Session: Recontextualising organised crime in West Africa: Impact and implications for stability and development

Session Description:

This session will feature three distinct interventions, each addressing different aspects of transnational organized crime under the global theme.

 

Jeannine Ella Abatan from the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) will explore the ambiguities and challenges between organized crime and livelihoods, with a focus on the impact on local populations, drawing from empirical studies. Momar Dieng from CENOZO will provide the perspective of an investigative journalist, discussing the significant challenges faced in investigating organized crime, corruption, and money laundering. François Patuel from UNODC will present findings from research on six illicit markets in the Sahel region, utilizing national data to demonstrate the wide-ranging impacts of transnational organized crime on regional stability and development.

 

The session will culminate in a discussion on the critical role of evidence in shaping policies aimed at stabilizing the region and promoting sustainable development, while highlighting the challenges in data collection across various sectors involved in gathering evidence.
